BIO
I am a Mexican artist who is based in San Antonio, TX. I graduated from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with my Bachelor of Fine Arts. My art focuses on the visual representation of dementia through the erasure of individuals. My focused mediums are acrylic inks and oil paints which are utilized on sheets of Yupo paper and canvas. Yupo paper allowed for me to showcase subtractive and additive elements that were similar to the irregular patterns of dementia.
Artist Statement
Our memory involves the ability to acquire, store, and retain recollections of past lived experiences. When an individual's memory is impaired, they lose cognitive functions that interfere with the capacity to perform basic processes on their own. This body of work is a visual representation of one's inability to remember, which can lead to states of disorientation and disintegration of the individual.
I explore the destructive effects of Dementia by fragmenting and blurring recognizable features of family members through portraiture. This is done differently for each person to show how the illness progresses in stages, and how each person becomes unrecognized differently. It is difficult to imagine my grandmother’s experience with dementia and to understand the difficulties she faced. Painting these portraits allows me to imagine my grandmother’s perspective and journey with the illness, while also presenting the difficulties our family felt as we cared for her. Feelings of remorse and regret were routine emotions we felt due to the challenge of caring for her while she was ill. These images were made to commemorate my family’s collective efforts and to assure them, we did the best we could.
